GYSD Report Back!!

The Zimbabwe Youth Environment Network (ZIYEN) a registered youth organization this year jointly worked together with Environment Africa and other youth organizations in Victoria Falls to commemorate the 2009 Global Youth Service Day.
Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is a time of the year when young people come together to focus the world’s attention on what young people are contributing every single day.
During GYSD, millions of youth around the world organize community service projects to address the needs of their local communities through volunteerism, to be recognized for their contributions and to be part of a global youth service movement. This is an annual event held in April in over 100 countries in every region of the world and this year it took place from the 24th to the 25th of April 2009.
At a local level, Victoria Falls commemorated the GYSD under the following objectives:

* To create linkages and partnerships with other youth organizations through participating in local and international events
* To promote inter cultural and social co-operation preparation amongst youths
* To engage youths in community services and contact with local schools

70 young people gathered to commemorate the 2009 Global Youth Service Day at Chamabondo Primary School. Volunteers wound up the commemorations by converging at the school to clean, clear and paint a classroom block within the school. There was first of all scraping of the building in preparation for painting.

For the past 4 years, the Zimbabwe Youth Environment Network has been commemorating the Global Youth Service Day at a smaller scale were there has been slashing of grass and land scraping. This has proven not to have much impact to the community as the rains would still come and the grass still shoots up within a very short space of time. In this year, the Network has embarked on a more recognizable project of painting a classroom block which leaves a mark in the community and in the school.

The education system in Zimbabwe has been crippled and it is with this experience that young people in Victoria Falls are undertaking to address the situation. We cannot wait for governments to act alone on educational and other responsibilities. It has to be individuals that change the course of the Earth’s future. The Government is under pressure from big businesses and industries that provide them with large amounts of tax dollars each year. By the time the government acts, it will be too late to reverse the damage. We will have to minimize any further damage and also as individuals and organizations contribute in the rebuilding of the educational system and other.
Why should we wait?? Stand up now and make a difference. Motto of the commemorations...

A number of stakeholders joined in the commemorations including the corporate sector, commercial banks, schools, councilors, and Non-Governmental Organizations. Young people were invited to join other youths to celebrate the indomitable spirit amongst them. In this time, The Zimbabwe Youth Environment Network would like to express their gratitude to all individuals, companies and Non Governmental Organizations for sacrificing their time and energy towards achieving these goals. May the good Lord bless you all and your businesses.

Successful community building also involves developing local leaders, who are able to gain self-understanding, as well as facilitation and community-building skills (Mattesich & Monsey, 1997).

As residents and youth learn on leadership skills, their voices for the common good is enhanced. In the Hwange District, youth were trained in relevant skills, including leading and facilitating discussions, public speaking, problem solving, conflict resolution, local governance, lobbying and advocacy.
Young people in this area have learned to routinely assess their strengths, identify areas of challenge, improvement, to give and take constructive criticism from teammates. They have come up with more strategic ways of involving decision makers into their dialogues and open discussion forums. In particular, youth learned to recognize the difference between their personal wants and needs, and also those of the community. This was important because the community-building work necessitated that youth lead the community, which meant including diverse groups and voices of youth and adults, and helping them come to consensus in decisions. In other words, the young people have realized that it is not about individual wants that should be pushed for action but they combine ideas and come up with one concrete and reasonable idea to be pushed forward to decision makers at a community level.

Armed with the knowledge the youth have gained from the trainings, they are now able to speak in authority in public forums and meetings. The youth also shared their experiences with other community based youth groups in which the groups have began enquiring on this programme and wanting to be part of it. To my view, this has contributed to changing community adult attitudes from viewing youth as current or potential problems, addicts and drunkards to seeing youth as responsible, knowledgeable, and contributing individuals. Finally, my understanding is that youth are the leaders of today and not leaders of tomorrow anymore as tomorrow seems not to come again. Forward with YOUTH empowerment.

Young People We care!!!

My view is that a community without young people actively involved in development is prone to collapse and total confusion. Young people bring life and action in communities.
Young people have been called leaders of tomorrow but in my view young people are the leaders of today because tomorrow never comes. This is our time and we aught to do something to show that we are indeed the leaders of today. Who can claim has not heard of climate change, global warming and HIV/AIDS?? No one indeed but why are people still dying and being affected by these pandemics?? Is it because people lack adequate knowledge or is it ignorance??
Many have the eyes but cannot see; they have the minds but cannot use them. Climate change, global warming and HIV/AIDS is not my problem neither your problem but it is OUR challenge. Some people say they have other delicious fish to fry than focusing on environmental and health issues but let me say, it is not long before you see the effects of your ignorance. You will be thoroughly hit by sun burn, your crops will face severe challenges to grow, you will lose all your cattle in the gullies you are ignoring opening up and you are only a few years away from inventing untold diseases that will as well affect you.
As young people we are saying NO to pollution, green house gas emissions, nylon manufacturing and destruction of the world’s forest. No one will come from the moon or other planets to come and solve our problems and challenges therefore we have to be involved in developing and being part of the change we all want to see five to ten years from today. YES, YES l say as young people we completely do not have any hindrance to make a difference for every individual counts and above all we are physically fit and have sharp and intelligent brains to develop any form of action for our benefit.
We cannot wait for governments to act on climate change. It has to be individuals that change the course of the Earth’s future (OUR ANYWAY). Governments are under pressure from big businesses and industries that provide them with large amounts of tax dollars each year. By the time they act, it will be too late to reverse the damage. We will have to minimize any further damage.
Why should we wait?? Stand up now and make a difference.

Global Youth Service Day
24 – 26 April 2009

The Zimbabwe Youth Environment Network (ZIYEN) a registered youth organisation will jointly work together with the newly formed Victoria Falls Residents Association (VIFACORA), Environment Africa and other youth organisations in Victoria Falls to commemorate the 2009 Global Youth Service Day.
This is an annual event held in April in over 100 countries in every region of the world and this year it is scheduled to take place from the 24th to the 26th of April 2009.
At a local level, Victoria Falls will commemorate the GYSD under the following objectives:
* To create linkages and partnerships with other youth organisations through participating in local and international events
* To promote inter cultural and social co-operation amongst youths
* To engage youths in community services and contact with local schools
Three sites have been identified for the GYSD commemorations namely the Victoria Falls referral hospital and Chamabondo Primary school. The GYSD will be held at Chamabondo Primary School on the first day. On the second day, a march from Busi Butchery in Chinotimba to Chamabondo Primary where the Victoria Falls Mayor will give a speech and officially launch the event to more than one hundred and eighty participants. Volunteers will wound up the commemorations by converging at the school to clean, clear and paint a classroom block within the school. There will be path-designing, landscaping, slashing grass in the periphery and renovation of infrastructure. The same activities will be extended to the hospital where the volunteers will as well meet the authorities and discuss topical issues.
A number of stakeholders will be invited for the commemorations including the corporate sector, commercial banks, schools, councilors, Non-Governmental Organisations and residents association. Young people are invited to join other youths to celebrate the indomitable spirit amongst them on these days. The Zimbabwe Youth Environment Network is willing to look way outside the box and take the risk associated with what they see outside the box. That ability, coupled with the passion and desire to make a change in our lifetime is a gift and will be utilized when looking for solutions.

Your Planet Needs You! UNite To Combat Climate Change.
Related to country: Zimbabwe

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Climate change has become an issue right across the world and many people may be wondering why this is happening and want know the reasons. It is at this point in time that each and every individual has to play a vital role in resuscitating our God given environment that is deteriorating day by day. Suddenly, climate change has been an issue on the agenda and action has to be taken.
Trees are heat stressed and the growing seasons are changing for crops in different countries. It is with this experience of climate change that will keep us working to fight climate change as the Zimbabwe Youth Environment Network. The idea behind this campaign is to increase youth participation in decision making processes specifically on environmentally related issues. It is no longer the winter that we used to know were we would almost freeze, its now opposite, as it is now beginning to be warm and farmers can no longer produce winter crops because of the in-conducive weather.
Climate change can be best defined as a paradigm shift of weather elements which are humidity, temperature, rainfall e.t.c. Skin diseases some probably yet to be discovered have become a challenging issue as it affects people. Large firms and engines that emit a lot of smoke into the atmosphere are the major causes of climate change. It is difficult to also advocate for these firms to stop operating because we need the products from their firms for survival and also for an economy to be stable, firms or industries are required. Now the question still stands, what then is the way forward?? It is however a difficult thing to embark on, but firms should use environmentally friendly fuels that produce less carbon into the atmosphere regardless of the expense the firms will incur. What we need to understand is that life is more precious than anything and hence we should also produce environmentally friendly products. It hurts to know that our God given fauna is being destroyed by man-made products. What heritage then are we preparing for the future generations?? Imagine a world without trees; animals and clean water. Why should people use all sorts of products to avoid skin diseases and infections whilst we can stop it now? And remember all this is being caused by you and me, so why not act positively?
As The Zimbabwe Youth Environment Network, we are fully committed to fight climate change. As young people with our youthful minds and ideas, we believe we can make a difference and that climate change will not just take place while we watch. We are doing all that we can from educating perpetrators of these effects to implementation of activities on the ground.
